legislature

legislature
The branch of government in which policy issues are discussed and assessed and public policies enacted by legislators.
In an indirect democracy, representation is a key function of legislatures. Most are elected bodies, whose members act on behalf of those who live in their area, for instance Members of Parliament being representatives of their constituents and of the party under whose label they were elected. Legislatures also act as deliberative bodies, considering public matters of national importance in debates in the chamber. They also have responsibility for discussing and passing legislation (the roots of the word ‘legislature’ are the Latin terms legis and latio meaning ‘law’ and ‘bringing’, ‘carrying’ or ‘proposing’), overseeing and scrutinising the Executive and authorising expenditure.
